PPD here means horizontal pixels divided by horizontal viewing angle. It helps compare the same screen at different distances, but it does not grade panel quality, eyesight, text rendering, GPU performance or application compatibility.

Measure the usable desk depth
Start with the eye-to-screen distance you can actually maintain, not the full depth printed on the desk listing.

Choose a physical size that fits the view
A wider screen occupies more horizontal field of view at the same distance and may require more eye or head movement.

Choose enough pixels for that size
Resolution and diagonal combine into PPI; the same resolution becomes less dense as the panel gets larger.

Account for operating-system scaling
Higher pixel density can improve rendering detail without guaranteeing more logical workspace if the interface is scaled up.

The computer, cable, port and application still need to support the selected resolution and refresh behavior.

Use ergonomic ranges as starting points, not commandments
Distance changes both view and apparent density
Moving a monitor closer increases its field of view and lowers pixels per degree without changing its physical PPI. That is why a density number needs a stated viewing distance before it describes what reaches your eyes.
Guidance intentionally allows adjustment
OSHA gives a general 20–40 inch viewing range. CCOHS presents a narrower figure but explicitly says published recommendations differ and should be tailored to the user and task. Read the CCOHS qualification.
More panel pixels do not guarantee more usable desktop space
A high-resolution monitor can draw text and interface edges with more detail while the operating system scales those elements to a readable physical size. Microsoft documents per-monitor scale factors for mixed-density setups, which is why a laptop and external monitor can expose different logical workspaces even when both are connected to the same computer. - Choosing inches without width
Aspect ratio changes the physical width and height produced by the same diagonal.
- Choosing 4K as a complete answer
The result still depends on diagonal, viewing distance, scale, workload and connection support.
- Treating PPI as usable workspace
Operating-system scaling can keep UI physically readable while reducing logical coordinates.
- Using a TV distance formula for a desk
TV cinema angles and desktop text work are different tasks; use monitor ergonomics as the starting context.
- Assuming generic references are products
The configurations on this page do not include stands, ports, refresh behavior or model-specific panel quality.
- Ignoring the complete footprint
Visible panel width does not include the bezel, stand depth, arm clearance or cable bend radius.
Questions that change the choice
- Is a larger monitor always better?
- No. It uses more physical width and fills more of your view at the same distance. Whether that helps depends on the task, placement and how much eye or head movement the layout requires.
- Does 4K automatically create more workspace?
- No. Native pixels increase potential detail, but the configured operating-system scale determines the logical workspace used by applications.
- Should I compare PPI or PPD?
- Use PPI to compare panel density. Add PPD when viewing distance differs, because it describes how many horizontal pixels fall into one degree of your view.
- Can this page recommend a specific monitor model?
- No. It compares geometry, density and modelled workspace. Ports, refresh rate, color performance, panel behavior, warranty and stand dimensions require product-specific evidence.
