The size decision is within the Pro pair
Against the compact Pro, the XL adds physical width and height as well as a wider CSS reference. That is a meaningful size comparison; the common DPR does not make their layout areas interchangeable.
Pixel 9 Pro XL: 6.8″, 1344 × 2992, 486 PPI, 448 × 997 CSS viewport at DPR 3. Choosing between the compact Pro and this XL changes both physical display size and the reference layout canvas. Moving from this XL to either of the next two tracked XL generations does not change the recorded screen geometry.

The later XL records reproduce this panel rectangle and pixel grid. A proportional outline comparison therefore overlaps them; these facts alone provide no screen-size reason to replace this model.
The specifications below come from the device records; the notes explain why each comparison is useful.
| Device configuration | Matched to | Screen | Panel | Viewport / workspace | PPI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 9 Pro XL Current page | Pixel 9 Pro XL | 6.8″ | 1344 × 2992 | 448 × 997 | 486 |
| Pixel 9 Pro The compact Pro is the same-generation lower-width boundary while keeping the same density class. | Pixel 9 Pro XL | 6.3″ | 1280 × 2856 | 427 × 952 | 495 |
| Pixel 10 Pro XL The following XL repeats the recorded display geometry, establishing the size baseline for an upgrade comparison. | Pixel 9 Pro XL | 6.8″ | 1344 × 2992 | 448 × 997 | 486 |
/* Pixel 9 Pro XL — portrait reference, not a breakpoint */
viewport: 448 × 997 CSS px
panel: 1344 × 2992 · DPR 3
/* Test immediately below and above your layout breakpoints. */Use the 448 × 997 CSS px at DPR 3 as a real QA target, then pair it with nearby widths for regression testing.
Values marked official come from manufacturer specifications; calculated values are derived from them; reference values are developer layout references and can vary with browser, zoom and operating-system settings.
